FAQ
PVC is approx. 38% cheaper compared to wooden windows, while having the same security and insulation values. Modern PVC windows do not get yellow with the years, due to new Plastic-technology.
Our all-new PVC window has sharp-edges and frames have been reduced in size to let in more light, giving it a modern look. We do not recommend wooden windows, unless there is an aluminum layer on the outside, protecting the wood against UV and rain. Wood windows need a lot of maintenance on the outside.
Wood & aluminum windows are more elegant than PVC windows; they are definitely more upscale and allow more options like RAL-colors on aluminum, different types of wood, flush handles, invisible hinges and sash-bars.
Our answer is yes! A new law in Switzerland says that all new installed windows/doors must be Minergie certified, in order to reach our Swiss goals of 0-CO2 by 2035. Minergie means best reduction of energy consumption and has a value of 0.5Ug, which means almost no energy loss! Triple glazed is Minergie certified, double glazed is not.
Enhanced security means that on each side of your window-frame there is one gear-locking system (RC1 – resistance class), making it almost impossible for thieves to open windows with a crowbar.
RC2 and RC3 means there are more than one of those gear-lockers on each side, plus the anti-shatter foils in between glass, the glass is glued onto the frame and outfitted with lockable handles.
In Switzerland, a law (SIGAB002) stipulates that all glass panes that are installed less than 1 meter above the floor, must either be tempered/hardened glass (ESG) or anti-shatter glass with foils (VSG). These glass panes do not break into sharp dangerous pieces when running/falling into the glass, which may cause injuries. ESG crumbles into a million pieces and VSG does not break apart, making it anti-injury proof.
Yes they are all swing and tiltable, but towards the inside for better theft-security and outer drainage.
Yes, we could also provide you with entire-aluminium windows, that have super thin frames.
Our partner company Hasler Fenster AG has a nice one in Schlieren, ZH. We could go there together.
We at Zurich Window love to work with an all-new window frame thus having the next 40 years of your house in mind. We think an all-new frame is more sustainable and gives the best all-round insulation results. All-new frame installation means we will remove your old frame completely and replace it with an all-new frame. In comparison with a renovation-frame, which means putting a thinner new frame on top of your old frame.
For all-new frame windows, often you will need a blinds company, to probably remove blinds or blinds-handles and for balcony and sliding doors a sealing company for outer sealing, guaranteeing you waterproofness according to SIA law (Swiss institute of Architecture). Sometimes when radiators are too close to the present window a pumper would have to reposition the heater, due to deeper/thicker windows caused by triple glazing. If plaster on the outside wall should chip off, due to old cracks, then a painter would be needed. When windows are very low or high up, then scaffolding is needed, due to Swiss-SUVA law.
We at Zurich Window would gladly coordinate most of these companies for you.
All our windows are custom made; approx. 4-5 months are required for installation once the contract has been signed.
We install approximately 5 windows per day, depending on the size. To obtain installation time, count the number of windows you want installed and divide by 5.
Probably not, because the new triple glazed window frames are deeper/thicker than the former ones, meaning that the inner damaged surface of the wall/plaster will be covered with the new frame. We can’t say for sure, but from experience, it wouldn’t need a repaint on the inside.
We cut out the old frames using high-precision tools that are attached to a vacuum cleaner. Nevertheless, there could be minor dust deposit after installation. We cover all the floors we walk and work on during our installation with floor-liner.
No, we are just a window-broker. Clients will sign with Hasler Fenster AG, which we partner with. Hasler Fenster AG builds all their windows locally.
No, but we work hand-in-hand with a local Blinds-company and will coordinate the work with them for you.
A standard window 1250mm wide and 1500mm high in PVC (Plastic) costs approx CHF 1200.- including our installation, same window in wood-aluminium costs approx CHF 1900.- including our installation, that price demands the replacement of at least 5 windows ! If we should just come for one window replacement add CHF 600.- due to minimum quantity surcharge. If we do more then 12x windows the price per window is again reduced.
Yes we have a great English speaking architect here in Zurich to collaborate with if needed.
Yes, switzerland is one of the only countries in the world, in which value-preservation investments in your property can be deducted from taxes. As a home owner you pay a tax called ascribed-rental-value tax, and this tax can be significantly reduced. Say you have a quote for CHF 50‘000.- for window replacement, then do the installation split in 2 years, meaning you can deduct 2 consecutive years CHF 25'000.- for biggest benefit. Seek support from a tax consultant.
Moisture on the inside occurs when the coldness from outside gets in contact with the warm interior. That is a sign that there is no thermal separation in the glass. Old, insulated double-glass windows have an aluminum spacer between/inside the glasses, which conducts energy, leading to moisture on the inside. New triple glass have spacers between the glasses that are thermally insulated
Due to triple glazing all windows come with dB33, which is much better than older double-glazing. If you wish even better sound proofness, then we will install thicker panes of glass, reaching from dB37 - dB42.
There is a lot of outer sealing done around windows/doors, which guarantees waterproofness. Those seals MUST receive maintenance every 10 years. Through the influence of UV and alternating weather conditions the sealing barrier lose their elasticity, allowing water and moisture to enter the gaps.
Our standard triple-glazed panes are equipped with a sun-reflection membrane that reduces/reflects the sunlight by 25%. We recommend that larger windows or doors facing the south/west could have the sunstop-glass option, which has a 47% sun-reflection membrane, keeping your rooms cool in the hottest of summers. With sunstop-glass you wouldn’t need to put blinds down in summer. The sunstop-glass has a slight tint in color.
Triple glass panes have the minergie standard, and in the process of manufacturing this standard, the glass is sophisticatedly treated with a reflection coating, making the glass more vulnerable to heat tensions, that could lead to cracks. To avoid such expensive situations please leave at least 25cm of space, between your window and any dark sofa or furniture piece, preventing a local heat-buildup!
One says the roof and windows are the areas where you have most heat loss in winter and heat penetration in summer. So its better to first invest in changing windows with great insulation and then replace heater later.
In Switzerland we often use basements to wash our cloths and hang up damp stuff, so its good to have a bad insulated window there, that guarantees a natural exchange with outside air! New triple glazed windows are too well insulated for basement use, with them there is a risk of getting dampness!
